Deepwater Horizon

The movie Deepwater Horizon is based on real life disaster that took place in Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

Director Peter Berg is back with another disaster based movie ‘Deepwater Horizon’, but this time the film is based on real events that took place 6 years before the film released.

The movie Deepwater Horizon is an American biographical disaster film which is directed by Peter Berg, one who directed the critically acclaimed movies ‘Lone Survivor’ and ‘Friday Night Lights’. It has been said for the director Burg that if he is passionate about something then one can find his dedication in the final output. The same passion can be seen reflecting in the film Deepwater Horizon. The piece of art is written by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Matthew Sand, and is based on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion.

The horrendous incident took place on April 20, 2010, when a series of explosions broke out in an oil rig, Deepwater Horizon, resulting in the death of 11 workers and caused the biggest ever oil spill in the ocean with the release of millions of gallons of petroleum into the Gulf of Mexico in US. This was categorized as the worst ever ecological manmade disaster by the experts. The movie has been debuted in Toronto International Film Festival and the film is technically well accomplished.

The film is bifurcated in two major portions, the first part depicts the intro of the crew and the family while the latter part features the disaster. In starting we meet Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg>) and his wife, Felicia Williams (Kate Hudson). The movie begins with his departure for the Gulf of Mexico to dig oil in the oil rig. On the field, there is one ‘Mr. Jimmy’ (Kurt Russel), who is an elder statesman and a respected person of the rig and Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriguez), who is a junior employee of Deepwater Horizon. One Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich) is a villainous character in the movie while Dylan O’Brien has played a crucial character ‘Calab Holloway’.

During the first half, crew can be seen discussing the pathetic state of equipments at the rig and there are number of arguments cum speeches over the ailing condition of the rig. The characters of the film are deep rooted and one forgets the stardom of Kurt Russell and Mark Wahlberg, while got engulfed in the intense characters of the duo. As the film proceeds towards culmination, everybody becomes more concerned about the survival of the crew and the drowning people, rather than completion of the movie. There are enough stunts to make public glued to the seats.

The pictography of the disaster is marvelous and looks like real as there is only water, mud, oil and fire allover and the disaster is as well imbued in the sequence of events, that one can easily ignore the flaws of the movie. The film is successful in exhibiting the real life geography and the timing of the real events, how and what happened exactly.

The film is more like the movie ‘Battleship’, which was a similar kind of story but was fictitious. The best part of the movie is when the explosion occurs, it reminds about the thrill that occurred when iceberg collided with Titanic, initially everybody tries to mend the loss occurred but soon the situation becomes uncontrollable and film turns into a rescue operation.
