King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Movie Synopsis
The story tells us how Arthur (Charlie Hunnam) was born under unfavorable circumstances. A nefarious sorcerer Mordred (Rob Knighton) and his army lay siege to Camelot to domineer over mankind, establishing a regime of Mages, who were a group of magic wielders. This objective is however thwarted by Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana), king of the Britons who infiltrates Mordred’s lair and decapitates him. Vortigern (Jude Law), Uther’s brother, begrudges him and wishes the throne for himself. He sacrifices his wife Elsa (Katie McGrath) to the sea witches and beckons a demon knight who kills Uther’s wife and defeats him too. His son, however, survives and drifts away in a boat which ends up in Londinium. There he is raised by prostitutes who call him Arthur.

Arthur grows up a sturdy man with his two robust mates Tristan and Backlack (Neil Maskell). They encounter a group of Vikings who had previously mistreated one of the prostitutes and coerces them to pay a year’s wages to her. This contretemps brings him immense tribulation when he is put on a ship with hundreds of other men. He later learns that the Vikings were guests of the king and by the brief antagonism, he had incurred the wrath of the monarch. On the ship, Arthur hears the story of the Excalibur sword and how the trials of many Backlegs have all proved fruitless in pulling it out from stone. When Arthur tries, he succeeds but faints from the sword’s overwhelming power. Vortigern meets him in a dungeon and reveals the secret of his royal lineage.

A mysterious woman identifying herself as an apprentice of Uther’s former general Sir Bedivere (Djimon Hounsou) fakes a diversion and rescues Arthur from his execution. He initially eschews from helping the people he meets at his hide out and faints while brandishing the sword. Bedivere takes Arthur to the Backlands to indoctrinate in him how to wield the weapon. There he learns how the vicious Vortigern maneuvers Mordred to rebel against humanity, envious of Uther’s superior power.

Arthur and his friends ambuscade and attack Vortigern, forcing him out of his hiding. Vortigern is aware that his maid is a spy of Bedivere and sends his body double in a meeting he announces with his barons at Londinium. The rebels are not oblivious to Vortigern’s underhand duplicity and attack as per their plan. Backlack receives grave injuries from this while Rubio is captured. Eventually, the rebels are permeated by the masses of Backlegs and their efforts fall short. The movie takes a theatrical turn when Arthur single-handedly slays all the soldiers, unleashing the power of the Excalibur sword when the mage is held at knifepoint.
In another series of events, a wounded Backlack is hounded by Kjartan, the commander of the Backlegs and Vortigern for information. Blue comes back impersonating as a shift worker but this subterfuge crumbles down soon. Arthur comes back to save him but Backlack had to die.

Unable to cope up with the salvo of distresses, Arthur angrily throws the sword in a lake and runs to the forest. The Lady of the Lake beckons him to her realm and shows him a vision of the future where England is steeped with despair under Vortigern’s rule. He realizes that only he can put an end to their misery. Arthur returns to the rebel hideout only to find out all the allies are dead and the king has threatened him to relinquish his efforts if he wished to see the mage and Blue alive.
Next we see a frantic Vortigern sacrifice his only daughter when his army is attacked and ravaged by a giant snake controlled by the mage. He turns into a demon knight and confronts Arthur in another dimension where the latter is quickly crushed. In his final moments before submission Arthur witnesses a flashback where his father was struck down after ossifying his body to stone. He then destroys Vortigern and his army after he snatches the sword before it runs through Uther.
The denouement portrays a mighty and just king Arthur coroneted by Blue and the prostitutes after he dissolves the pact with the Vikings, declaring that everyone should respect the throne of England if they wished to avoid war. King Arthur Legend of the Sword: Focus on News

“Legend of the Sword’s brazen reimagining of Arthurian mythos, coupled with Ritchie’s style, makes for a bombastic yet entertaining King Arthur epic.”
A few critics have acclaimed the high style of director Ritchie and his queer characterization of noble war-like personas. The movie is entertaining and gripping in its scenes of combat and dramatic milieu.

“A loud, obnoxious parade of flashy set pieces, as one visually busy, belligerent action scene after another marches by, each making less sense than the last, but all intended to overwhelm.”
Ritchie has been lambasted for his impudent treatment of a legend Arthur. Although the cast manages to put up a convincing act, the story line is treated weakly and with a series of pugnacious scenes that sometimes hardly make sense to the audience.
